
Cord and Maria finally find some time alone. Maria finally tells Cord that she was not pregnant when they married, she had told her father she was pregnant in order to get out of marrying Paulo. The lie just grew and grew in size. When she fell from the horse, while they were racing in the desert, she did not lose the baby. She only lost that portion of the lie.
Cord apologizes for being so stubborn and jealous. He has avoided being with her because of he is a very stubborn man. He wanted her from the first moment he saw her. Her father had other plans for her, and her unexpected pregnancy, by the missing war hero she had been dating, was more than he could take. He married her to make Pedro mad, but has fallen in love with her during their journey across the prairie.
Maria wants nothing more than for Cord to hold her, she is still a virgin and still fears being with a man. As Cord approachs, Maria shivers in fear and anticipation. The moment of forgiveness has arrived.
