Rosa comes to Maria with news....
Maria's father has not returned from town. The ranchhand sent to town to find out why has not returned either.
Rosa is very upset, she knows that Maria's father does not love her, he only wants the child that she carries and only if that child is a male. Why did I marry him? He said he loved me, but that only lasted for a few months. He hasn't touched me since I told him about the baby coming.

Maria also wishes she had the happy marriage that everyone thinks she has. Cord has not returned. It is quiet in the house tonight. Noone seems to be stirring. Maria feels sorry for Rosa and her situation, but she has her own problems.
